General Cable, a leading international company in the cable sector, has been recognised by the EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) Club for having held its environmental certification for 10 years. The certification is a voluntary management tool for businesses, enabling them to assess, improve and promote their environmental performance. The award has been presented to the General Cable plants in Abrera, Manlleu and Montcada, all in the province of Barcelona.
The award ceremony for this important distinction took place recently at the Esfèric Hall in Barcelona, chaired by the Regional Government of Catalonia’s Minister for the Environment Francesc Baltasar, who was accompanied by the Director General for Environmental Quality of the same department María Comellas, the director of the Catalan Climate Change Office Salvador Samitier and the chairman of the EMAS Club Martí Puig, among other dignitaries. The award was presented to General Cable’s Environmental Director Cristina Perelló and its Environmental Officer Sergi Balboa. Over 200 people from the business sectors, the authorities, the trade union organisations and the media attended the event.
The EMAS awards took place during the European Waste Reduction Week organised by the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC). Their main objective was to recognise the efforts made by companies such as General Cable in their contribution towards improving our environment. The jury for the awards was formed by public figures from the environment, business and university sectors and from society in general. General Cable was one of the companies rewarded for having held the EMAS certification for 10 years, true recognition of this pioneering company in the application of measures to preserve the environment.
