General Cable issues invoices showing details of each cable’s CO2 value

4-May-2010

General Cable, a world leader in the cable sector, has taken yet another step forward in its environmental protection policy. On its invoices to customers, the company specifies the carbon dioxide (CO2) values of each cable. Providing information on greenhouse gas emissions (GGE) is a practice that is very likely to become compulsory for companies, although General Cable has decided to do so of its own accord. It is once again, therefore, proving its commitment to the sustainable development of society.

All insulated electric cables and wires have specific CO2 emission values, details of which are given in a sectoral table produced by the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Electric and Optical Fibre Cables and Conductors (FACEL). Low voltage copper cables thus have emissions of 0.327 kg CO2/kg of cable, while for low and medium voltage aluminium cables the figure is 0.408. Emissions are 0.356 for other energy and special cables, 0.417 for telecommunications cables, and 0.585 for enamelled wire.

Sustainability is a basic premise for General Cable, a company that has always shown the utmost respect for the environment. It was the first cable manufacturer to be awarded both ISO 14001 certification for its Environmental Management System and EMAS certification, and to implement fully environmentally friendly management in every phase of its production processes.
