General Cable, a world leader in the cable sector, has recently issued a new catalogue of cables specifically aimed at the naval industry. The catalogue features the Exzhellent-Mar range of cables, made in accordance with current IEC standards and intended for installation in energy distribution and control circuits and signals in fixed installations on vessels.
A particularly interesting innovation in the catalogue are the flexible, sector-shaped copper conductors in sections of 50 mm2 or larger, designed to facilitate laying and installation in shorter times and to save on space. Such constructions allow for reductions in finished cable diameter and minimise interstitial space between conductors.
The catalogue, which has 94 abundantly illustrated full-colour pages, includes texts in Spanish and English and shows details both of the company’s range of cables for the naval sector, and the series of instrumentation cables for shipbuilding. There are three main groups: cables for general services, fire-resistant cables for safety services (IEC 60331), and cables designed for variable frequency drive (VFD) systems.
The catalogue details the main technical features of each cable and an image of its cross section. The information includes design specifications, the certification standards met by each cable, possible applications, anti-fire performance and sheath composition. Technical quantities such as assigned voltage, maximum admissible intensities, shielding, minimum temperature, minimum curvature radius and outer diameter tolerances are also indicated.
The safety of people and equipment is a key consideration in General Cable’s Exzhellent-Mar range. The polymer compounds used in their manufacture are halogen-free, and give off low opaque smoke and acid gas emissions in accordance with the relevant IEC standards. Exzhellent-Mar may therefore be used in vessel critical equipment zones or in the crew’s quarters, where a view of escape routes and low gas toxicity levels allow for quick, safe evacuation.
The information in the catalogue of General Cable cables for the naval industry is accompanied by a description of the company’s corporate profile, its presence worldwide, its business philosophy and its commitment to innovation.
